Spignesi

Giovanni, I have been doing some research on my family.I live in the U.S in the state of Kansas. My great grandfather (Ludovico) left Ponza in the late 1800's for the United States and settled in New Haven,Conneticut. We think that he was the first Spignesi to come to the U.S. His son Dominico who was my grandfather died a year ago so I can't get any information about my family. I was wondering if there are any Spignesi families left in Ponza and if so can you give me some information on the families. I found a Mauro Spignesi in Cagliari and he works for a newspaper there. Any information you could give me would be apprieciated. Thank You. Michael Spignesi

Scotti & Conte

Dear Giovanni: I'm e-mailing you from Massachusetts, USA. I am a genealogist and a Conte family and Scotti family researcher, looking into my family history. I've enjoyed your web site, "Isola di Ponza", at Ponza.net I have Scotti's and Conte's from Ponza in my family tree as well. My great grandmother was named FRANCIS SCOTTI. She was probably born around 1875 on Ponza. Her husband's name was CAMILLO CONTE, also probably born in the 1870s on Ponza. Their son, SILVIO BRUNO CONTE SR. (nicknamed: "SAM"), was my grandfather. Silvio was born on Ponza on October 23, 1894. He emigrated to the USA around 1910-1911 and married twice and had 12 children. He died on October 10, 1975 in Detroit, Michigan. I'm seeking information on my SCOTTI and CONTE relatives from Ponza. I'd like to complete my family tree and connect with lost relatives. I have three questions for you: 1) How do I post a message on your "E-mail Forum"? I could not find any instructions on how do post a message anywhere on your web site. 2) Do you know how I could get hold of a Ponza telephone directory? Or perhaps is there a web site that would have this information on it? 3) Is it possible that you and I are related? It would seem so! We both have Scotti's and Conte's from Ponza. Do you have any knowledge or information on my Francis Scotti or the Conte family line from Ponza? If not, do you know of anyone I could contact who might? In particular I would sincerely like to connect with genealogists who specialize in the people of Ponza. Thank you for your time. I look forward very much to hearing from you! With Kindest Regards, Dr. D. MacTavish ramcol@nii.net =========================================

Feola

Dear Mr. Coppa I am writing to you for any information you may have about my family. Here is a summary of what I know: My great-great-grandfather Salvatoria Feola had 10 children, one of which was my great-grandfather Aneillo (Samuel) Feola. My great-grandfather married Louisa DeAngeles and they had 4 boys (Dominic, Samuel, Julius, and Frank) and 3 girls (Ida, Mary, and Katie). Samuel is my grandfather. My great-grandfather, Aneillo, came to the U.S. in 1898 with his uncle Tony Feola. They lived in New York but Aneillo eventually moved to West Virginia were he built railroad. Following the depression, he started a greenhouse business around 1929. The business was a success and my father David Feola and my uncle Howard Feola own and run it today. I know most of my family history in the U.S. but I am unsure of my family history in Italy. I understand that at some point before Aneillo came to the U.S. he or his father owned land on the Island of Ponza and when he left for New York he was living on the Ponza. I am also told that he gave his land away to relatives when he left. Furthermore, the only connection to Ponza that I still have today is the Balzano family. I believe that Giovanni Balzano's mother was Aneillo's (my great-grandfather) sister. I know Giovanni and his two sons Anthony and Mario live on Ponza today and I am hoping to learn more about my family and try to contact the Balzano family before my departure to Ponza sometime in May of 1999. If you have any more info concerning my family or an address for Giovanni Balzano I would greatly appreciate your time and effort in relaying it back to me. I hope the spelling of all the names is correct. My email address is: tfeola@wvu.edu Thanks so much. Sincerely, Tyler Feola

Giovanni,
My name is Pete and I married a beautiful Italian woman named Carol DiMeglio. Carol's father, Ulysses DiMeglio, is from the Island of Ponza and he has asked me to contact you regarding any relatives of his still on the Island. Let me give you some history.
Carmino DiMeglio married Filomena Riviecchio on Ponza. They lived in LeForne. They had two children, Ulysses (born 1921) and Anna (born a few years later). Filomena had at least 2 cousins. Their names are Asunta Riviecchio (maiden name) and Antonieta Riviecchio (maiden name). Ulysses remembers fishing with Aniello Riviecchio (his uncle) until he left the Island for America in approximately 1935 with his mother and sister. His father Carmino left the Island several years before 1935 to prepare a home in America for them.
Carmino DiMeglio died in America at the age of 82 in 1978. His wife Filomena died in America at the age of 80 in 1980. Ulysses lives in the state of New Jersey and his sister Anna lives in the state of Florida.
Ulysses married a beautiful Italian women (Asunta) and have two sons (Carmine, Joseph) and a daughter (Carol). Ulysses and Asunta have 9 grandchildren.
Any information you have on anyone who remembers these lovely Ponzeses is appreciated.
Pete

I have the pleasure of meeting most of my relatives in 1988, fortunately one family had just returned from Canada and the sons could interpret for me. It was quite an experience which I must repeat again. My father Julius went the following summer.
Unfortunately Julius died 2 years ago. But I carry on his name proudly as does my son. Thankyou for your reply............

Hi! We're hoping that you may understand English.
My husband's grandmother Mary Affinito was born in Ponza. She was daughter of Civita and Carmen Mazzella fu Angelo Mazzella and Silveria Mazzella of Santa Maria. She knows a little Italian, but we're having trouble translating your page. She moved to the States when she was 8. She went to Ponza last in 1982, and she could find no relatives. If you speak English and can translate some of the page, we would love to hear from you. She is visiting us in Arizona from Florida.
Thank you, and have a great day!

Vincenzo Cuono
Please forward this letter, if you will, to Mr. Guarino, re his letter from 1996. February 14, 1999 Dear Mr. Guarino: I recently read your letter of November 1996, to the Coppa.com home page. I showed this letter to my grandfather who is originally from the island of Ponza. He has decided to respond to your letter, which I have translated and reproduced here. "Dear Mr. Guarino, My name is Bismarck Cuono and I was born on the island of Ponza on August 31, 1905. I emigrated to the United States in 1927. I have since returned to Ponza several times. I was trained as a boat builder on Ponza and worked in City Island, New York for over forty years. In December 1927 I went to work in the woods of West Virginia for the Bluejay Lumber Company where I met your father Liberato, and his brother. We were building a railroad to transport lumber from the woods to a mill. Years before, even your grandfather, Luigi Guarinoi had worked for the Bluejay Company. Right after the Wall Street crash of 1929, most of the Ponzese in America moved back to Morris Avenue in the South Bronx. I recognized the names of your relatives and some of them I knew personally, they were my contemporaries. What follows is some of what I remember about your family: Your grandmother on your father's side was Antonietta Aversano, the wife of Luigi Guarino. Your father's sister, your aunt, Antonietta Guarino married Antonio Capone. Your maternal grandmother was Antonietta Perrota Coppa, wife of Giovanni Coppa. She had a sister Assunta Perrota Bosso. Your mother, Florence Coppa had a sister, whose name I cannot recall, but who was married to Liberato's brother, your uncle on your father's side. After a few years, however, the marriage ended and your uncle returned to Ponza. As far as I can remember, he never came back to the United States. Your mother had another sister, Marietta Coppa, who was residing in Sea Isle City, NJ. Your mother had a third sister who lived in Florida with her children and had a pizzeria there. I have two daughters and one son. I live with my son, Ciro Cuono, CPA, and daughter-in-law Silvia Mazzella (also Ponzese) and they have three sons, Marco, Vincenzo and Ciro. Marco is an attorney living in Key Biscayne, Florida. Vincenzo is an attorney living in White Plains, NY and working in Manhattan. Ciro is a Civil Engineer also living in White Plains and working in Manhattan. How is it that you ended up in Santa Monica? What do you do there? I know several Ponzese who also live in California. Perhaps you know some of them? Geppino L'Addomato, Carmine Migliaccio and Aniello Mazzella. Also, Attilio Coppa, who lives in San Diego, as well as others. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Bismarck Cuono" As we do not have your e-mail address we have asked Mr. Coppa if he would kindly forward this e-mail to you. I hope this e-mail finds you well and if you would respond my grandfather would be very pleased. Very truly yours, Cuono, Vincenzo vcuono@aol.com
